Brief History
Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) is a Canadian bank established in 1864 by a group of business men.
Royal Bank of Canada emerged in Halifax and was named Merchants Bank of Halifax. The
Merchants Bank of Halifax was renamed to The Royal Bank Of Canada (RBC) in the 1900. The
name was then shortened to Royal Bank Of Canada in the 1990. RBC only removed the word
“the” from “The Royal Bank Of Canada” to just “Royal Bank Of Canada”. In the 1900 Canadian
banks were ranked by assets and deposits, Royal Bank Of Canada was ranked as Canada’s
largest bank in 1920. Royal Bank Of Canada traded with Banks such as Bank Of Montreal until
1940. In early 1800 RBC was so successful that it opened branches internationally, outside of
Canada by the late 1800 RBC had already opened two more branches in New York, U.S.A and
Havana, Cuba, after World War 2 RBC opened an oil and gas department in Calgary in 1951. As
RBC saw itself progress in the 1990s they focused more on achieving revenue growth through a
focus on fee based businesses because they thought this would generate more revenue this
way. RBC entered the stock exchange in (1893) then followed by Vancouver, Alberta, Winnipeg,
Tokyo and London, England. The Swiss Electronic Stock was in the late 1900 followed by, last
but not least New York in (1995) in 1907 RBC relocated its headquarters from Halifax to
Montreal. In 2001 RBC changed its logo to “RBC Financial group” to attract firms and
businesses. The RBC symbol was also changed from the lion facing left with a crown and a black
background to the lion facing right with no crown and a blue background. As what we have
seen RBC’s changes in the company were based on development and growth, each time the
company required any change weather it was to relocate or change the name, the company
become widely known and successful. The company has also added different segments for
different use, the banks first segment was for personal use then added business and know has
five segments, which we will discuss later in the report.
